The monkey who had lost his face
Once upon a time, there was a monkey. Many in the
settlement liked him and others didn’t. Those, who liked him, did it because
he was always laughing, spoke to everybody and made jokes about everything
and everybody all day long and took nothing for serious. Those, who didn’t
like him, did it because of the same reason.
But one morning when he went on the street, he
noticed that the monkeys crossing him, looked at him in a very strange way,
some laughed, others were frightened of him, but none of them behaved like
before and nobody stopped to talk to him. He was very sad and went home.
In the entrance hall of his house, there was a
big mirror and when he stood in front of it, he noticed that something was
different about him. However, he couldn’t immediately find out what was
wrong. Then he saw it, he had no face. On the place, where his faced used to
be, there was a great emptiness. Only his eyes where on their place and they
looked strange there, alone, without eyebrows, no nose and mouth below them.
He lifted his hands and touched the emptiness to make sure that it was real
what he saw. Yes, he had lost his face.
He tried to remember where he could have left it.
When he had come home the previous evening, some so-called friends
accompanied him and they behaved normally, which meant that at that time he
must still have had his face on his place. Therefore, he began to look around
in his house. First, he ran from room to room, but as he didn’t find it, he
began to look in every corner. Without success!
Of course, he asked himself many questions. For
example: How can somebody lose one’s face? Wouldn’t he have noticed if
somebody had tried to cut his face off?
He threw himself on his bed and wanted to cry but
no tears came out of the emptiness and ran down on his cheeks because there
was none. For many days, he didn’t leave his house, didn’t eat nor drink.
Of course, by that time, everybody in the
settlement had heard about the monkey without face and as he was not seen in
the streets anymore, the inhabitants felt a bit guilty. They thought that
maybe someone had stolen his face.
There was a female monkey who didn’t particularly
like him but who felt sorrier for him than the others did. She went to his
house with some food and drink and knocked at the door. There was no answer.
She knocked again for many times. After approximately an hour, the door
opened at last. First, the female monkey was shocked and nearly ran away but
our main character of the tale touched her hand, she stayed, and with his
eyes, he pleaded her to come in.
When she took the food and drink out of the
basket in which she had brought them, he suddenly felt that tears came out of
his eyeholes and slowly his face came back.
For the first time in his life, he had had a
sincere feeling and that was what brought his face back. Now, those began to
be friends with him who had despised him before and those who had liked him
because of his insincerity now hated him.
