the girl, who dreamed of being a princess in
London
It was evening, and my elder brother and me were
already lying in bed, waiting for our father to come and tell us a tale
before sleeping.
Our father came and first fixed our bedcover so
that only our heads were visible. Then he sat down on the side of the bed and
began to tell us a tale.
The tale went like this:
Once upon a time, there was a little girl, and
when she was playing in the garden, she found a mouse in a trap. The mouse
complaining said to her: "I am Miguelito, the wonderful mouse. Please,
free me and give me cheese! Then I will grow and take you on my back wherever
you want."
The girl released the mouse and first took care
of the wound on the mouse's leg. Then she gave the mouse some cheese and the
mouse became a dog. She gave him a little more cheese and he became a calf, a
little more cheese, he was a horse, each time a bit bigger, an elephant and
in the end a whale. Miguelito, formerly a mouse now a purple whale, said to
the girl: "Jump on my back! We will travel around the world. Where do
you want to go first?"
With a jump, the girl was on the back of the
whale, and the animal threw itself into the sea. Some seagulls followed them
and asked where they were going. "To Austria," the girl yelled, and
the whale pushed a large spring of water out of his breathing hole.
But suddenly, in the middle of the sea, the whale
became smaller. "Quick! Give me some cheese!" said the whale,
Miguelito. Fortunately, the girl had taken all the cheese out of the fridge
at home and gave the whale a piece.
Then they continued on their way and each time
the purple whale grew smaller, the girl gave him a piece of cheese. And just
as the last piece of cheese had disappeared into the big mouth of the purple
whale, they saw land. The whale was already just a dog, and the girl with the
dog swam the last ten meters to the shore.
And when the girl and the dog, which was now just
a mouse, came out of the water, they saw an Indian and a cowboy fighting. The
girl hid the mouse in her pocket and came closer. The Indian shouted: "I
was here first, you stole my land." The cowboy replied, "I am a
Protestant and I was persecuted in Europe. I thought I would get a little piece
of land here."
As she approached, the two men stopped fighting
and when they recognized in her the daughter of the great lord of the
enchanted forest who understood the language of all animals, plants, water
and materials, they fell to their knees and offered her their services.
"Why are you fighting?" The princess said to them, "is there
not enough land for everyone in the world?" The two men lowered their
heads and kissed the little princess's feet. The Indian took her home to rest
and the cowboy brought a large basket with different types of cheese, bread,
olives, and other fruits.
The girl and the mouse, Miguelito, ate and drank,
but the mouse did not eat cheese, because the girl did not want him to grow in
the house.
The next morning, the mouse asked, "Where do
you want me to take you today?" "I want to touch the sky,"
said the girl. Miguelito, the wonder mouse, became very sad. "Why are
you sad?" Asked the girl. "I can't fly and there isn't enough
cheese in the world to make me so big, to take you to the sky," the
mouse replied with tears in his eyes. But when he saw the disappointment on
the girl's face, he thought for a moment and said, "But I can take you
to the highest mountain."
"But we need a lot of cheese for this
trip," said Miguelito. Then the girl put as much cheese as possible in
her pocket. Then they left the Indian's house, went to the ocean and the
mouse, turned into a whale, jumped into the water. With the girl on her back,
he swam through the water.
And when they reached the other side of the
ocean, the girl told a Buddhist monk about her plan and that she needed
cheese for her wonderful companion. The old monk was a little surprised, but
then remembered that he too had been a dreamy boy, so he gave the girl as
much cheese as he could.
Then the monk sat under a tree to do his daily
exercise. The girl watching him sat next to him and made them with him. But
the monk was even more surprised, when she did the figure of a bridge and
began to walk, she put her feet behind her head and without the help of her
hands she stood on her head.
When she finally left the monk, he gave her an
amulet to protect her from all the evil in the world.
The girl thanked the monk for everything he had
done, gave the wonder mouse, Miguelito, a little cheese to turn him into an
elephant, jumped on his back and they continued their journey.
They climbed higher and higher, first bathed in
the clouds, and then had the stars directly in front of their eyes. The girl
wanted to take one of the stars, but suddenly her father's voice spoke to
her, "Your wish has been fulfilled. Each star is a soul, you cannot take
them away."
Miguelito started to shrink, he needed more
cheese. "We must go down," he said to the girl and led her to the
foot of the mountain.
Miguelito was a little mouse again and the girl
put him into her pocket.
She found a peasant's house. The woman in the
house saw that the girl was hungry and invited her to lunch. A lot of cheese
was served.
"Where are you going?" asked the woman.
"To the country of cheese and chocolate,"
replied the girl.
But by then the children were already asleep and
the father left the room.
