Big and small
It was morning and the small monkey went to drink
to the fountain at the foot of the big mountain. His eyes were still drowsy
when he suddenly saw a big shadow coming up over him. “Hey, you!” he heard a
deep voice. Then he watched upwards and saw the lion, the king of the
grasslands in front of him. “Are you going to the fountain?” the big animal
growled at him. “Yes, my dear king,” answered the small monkey trembling. “I
permit you to drink from it but you must tell me straight away when other
animals want to get water from it because the fountain belongs to me,
otherwise I will devour you,” the lion told him. “Yes, of course! I’m your
humblest servant,” replied the small animal. The lion grinned, he was aware
that everybody feared him. Finally, the big animal disappeared and the monkey
still trembling could continue his way to get some refreshing liquid.
However, he was not lucky that day. Some moments
later, he suddenly saw a big shadow coming up over him again. “Hey, you!” he
heard a deep voice. Then he watched upwards and saw the big gorilla, the lord
of the woods in front of him. “Are you going to the fountain?” the big animal
growled at him. “Yes, my dear lord,” answered the small monkey trembling. “I
permit you to drink from it but you must tell me straight away when other
animals want to get water from it because the fountain belongs to me,
otherwise I will devour you,” the gorilla told him. “Yes, of course! I’m your
humblest servant,” replied the small animal. The gorilla grinned, he was
aware that everybody was afraid of him. Finally, the big animal disappeared
and the monkey still trembling could continue his way to get some water.
What should he do now?
He didn’t even feel thirsty anymore but just sat
down and cried. He did not know which king or lord was stronger and which
side he, the small monkey, should choose but he knew that it was him who
would be devoured first in case of a confrontation between the two big
animals.
As he was there broken down and shedding brooks
of tears, a small female monkey came by. When he felt a shadow coming closer,
he curled up and got flat on the ground as if he wanted to disappear under
the ground. “Be a male and get up when you talk to a female!” she shouted at
him, “you, humblest slave of everybody!” Slowly, he sat up normally and
narrated what had just happened to him. “Come with me!” she told him and they
went away together.
Having arrived at a clearing, the female took two
sticks and using the hollow tree trunk as a drum called all her friends together.
Within half an hour the trees around were filled with birds, on the sides
deer, and monkeys were sitting and standing and in the front rows, the
smallest, rabbits, rats and mice. Everybody was talking at the same time and
trying to find out what the reason had been to call in the meeting.
“Dear congress of the small animals!” the small
female said in loud clear voice and all the assemble got silent to listen to
what she had to tell them. “Look at this heap of misery! I found him crying
on the way to the fountain,” she stopped because all the other small animals
were laughing. “He has always been the slave of the powerful.” She wanted to
continue but a loud “Booh!” went through the ranks. “But now he is in big
trouble.” Many of the animals laughed, others looked concerned, not because
they would have cared much for the servant monkey, but because they knew that
the danger of one small animal meant danger to other small animals as well.
The female speaker held up her paws and the assemble got silent again. “It’s
not for him I called you here to gather. This humblest slave of the powerful
doesn’t even deserve shading a tear for him. He always licks upwards and
kicks downwards. No, something much more important has occurred.” Now, all
the small animals listened with eyes wide open and raised ears. “The lion on
one hand and the gorilla on the other hand want to take the fountain into
possession and to control who drinks from it.” A loud murmur went through the
rows. “But I have a plan to teach them a lesson.” Cheers of joy came from all
sides and she told everybody what they had to do. At the end of the meeting,
they tied the small monkey up to prevent him from running away and betraying
them.
The fountain came out of a rock and was itself
surrounded by big walls of rocks only open on one side, which was bordered by
big trees with dense foliage. Before dawn, the small animals had collected
stones, nuts and much other material that could be used to be thrown. Then
they took position in the trees and on the rock walls.
When the sun came up the armies of the gorilla
and the lion appeared in front of the fountain. With sparkling eyes, they
stood opposite to each other. Then the fight began. Shouting and groaning
could be heard but nothing could be seen because of the whirled up dust.
After some hours of fierce beating and hitting,
the big animals began to be tired and in the end as the dust had gone down
again, many tired lions and gorillas were laying and sitting on the ground.
Then the small female monkey came out from her
hiding place and stood in front of the bickering parties. “Hey, you, lions
and gorillas!” she shouted and the big animals looked at her in surprise. “Do
you really think that the fountain belongs to you?” she continued. The lion
king prepared to jump at her but instantly, he was covered by stones and nuts
thrown at him from everywhere so that he had to retreat. Then he tried it
again. And again for minutes the air was filled with small flying objects and
birds dropping stones like bombs.
If one hadn’t known the prehistory of the event,
one would have pitied the lions and gorillas with ruffled fur and bumps all
over their bodies. Then the lion king and the gorilla lord stepped forward
with white flags in their paws asking for peace. “We swear we will never
again try to take in possession the fountain. It shall always be there for
everybody.”
Cheers of joy from everywhere, from the trees and
the rock walls now filled the air.
And what about our humblest servant or slave?
There will always be small monkeys trying to gain
advantage over other small animals by serving the powerful. Those servants
and slaves do not deserve to be despised because they cannot even look at
themselves in a mirror.
