The frightening forest

On the market place a big crowd of monkeys had gathered, they were listening to an old monkey who told them about the last forest not far from the village. “Don’t go there! There are bad spirits killing you. Look at that,” and he showed them a terribly looking deep but already healed wound. Those nearest shied away, those behind them tried to get closer to see better. “I received this in the forest and it nearly cost my life to get out again.” Everybody looked at him with deep respect. The activity on the market place continued, some were buying, others selling.
From far that forest didn’t really look as dangerous as the old monkey had told them but the monkeys of the village were very superstitious and inside the forest it was very dark as it was the last untouched primeval wood with dense thicket which made it impenetrable and a real maze.
For a very long time, the monkeys didn’t even go near it. However, once children were playing hide and seek near it and one of the kids hid behind the first trees and of course, could not be found by the other because they didn’t dare to go even to near to the wood. First, that kid was very afraid to hide in those trees but as nothing special happened, it hid there again and again without telling the others where it had disappeared. When that monkey had grown up, he didn’t play hide and seek anymore, but was rather curious what could be discovered inside the mysterious forest.
So, one day, that monkey took some food with himself and entered the density of the trees. Of course, he was not the bravest but looking around him and listening to the tumult between the trees, he could only observe the usual noise of birds, insects and the sound of the wind playing with the leaves. Therefore, he entered deeper and deeper into the forest. He could only advance very slowly because the thicket was so dense but after some hours of struggling through branches, twigs and leaves of trees, bushes and shrubs, he suddenly reached a clearing. It looked like a paradise with flowers, fruit trees, small waterfalls and basins. The air there was cool because of the water and perfumed by the plants, fruits and flowers.
Suddenly, he stopped because he heard steps coming closer. He hid behind one of the rosebushes and watched. Then he saw the old monkey. First, he wanted to greet him but then he began to think. “Why had the old monkey told all the other inhabitants of the village that there were murderous spirits in the forest?” He remembered how the villagers had destroyed the environment around them and understood that the old monkey had told all the horrible tales to prevent others to come to his garden and destroy his paradise.
After having watched the old monkey for some time looking after his wonderful garden with the most tender care, he decided not to betray his being there but to leave the paradise and not to tell anybody about it.
One day again at the market place, when the old monkey told his tales about the mysterious forest, that young monkey joined into the story telling, “Just yesterday, I came to close to some of the trees of the wood and I heard terrible noises and a branch reached out to catch me. I could hardly escape.” Only for a moment, the young and the old monkey looked into each other’s eyes and both understood the meaning, one realized that his paradise had been discovered and the other felt his promise being accepted and trusted not to tell anybody about the secret.
These two monkeys never talked to each other but from that day on, there was a warm smile in their eyes when they met at the market place.
Life went on normally, but one day the young monkey noticed that the old had not been to the market for two weeks. “Something must have happened,” he thought. Therefore, he decided to enter the wood again. After some hours, he had reached the garden of the old monkey and began to look around.
Suddenly, he saw the feet of the old under a tree. When he came nearer, the old monkey seemed to be sleeping with a happy smile on his face. First, the young monkey wanted to go away silently, but then went closer. The body of the old monkey had something strange on him. Now, it was clear; the old monkey had died.
Then, he found a sheet of paper with these words on it: “My dear young friend! I’m very grateful that you didn’t tell anybody about my paradise and that way helped its survival. I’m old and going to die. I want you to be my heir.”
Tears were running down the cheeks of the young monkey. He sat near the dead body for some hours and then buried him.
The next morning, he went back to the village. For some days, he didn’t talk to anybody, but then he decided to tell the other inhabitants about what had happened and to lead them to the paradise. He hoped that something would change in them when they saw the wonderful garden. He hoped they would respect the heritage of the old monkey and preserve the last paradise.
