The most wonderful child
Once upon a long time ago, there was a wonderful
valley. It was surrounded by smaller hills and cut into two parts by a
smaller river. The long ear monkeys lived on the western shore and the long
tail monkeys on the eastern shore. Both monkeys were not very tall but could
ran fast, climb deftly and work persistently and hard. The climate was so
mild and good that they could harvest fruits, vegetables and rice all through
the year. Apparently, it was a quiet and peaceful valley.
However, every spring, the elephants entered the
western shore and encouraged the long ears to attack the long tails. Of
course, the elephants participated in the battles and that way, the long
tails were easily beaten each time, their food storage stolen and their
village plundered. Then, the elephants took their part of the prey and left
the valley crossing the hills to the west.
In autumn, the gorillas entered the eastern shore
and encouraged the long tails to do the same with the long ears. Of course,
the gorillas participated in the battles and that way, the long ears were
easily beaten each time, their food storage stolen and their village
plundered. Then, the gorillas took their part of the prey and left the valley
crossing the hills to the east.
In summer and winter the two peoples often met
opposite each other on the shore to do the washing or other kind of work at
the river and did it very peacefully.
One day, two females were doing the washing at
the shore. They had watched and waved to each other for a long time but never
got in touch because only males participated at the battles and plundering.
Suddenly one slipped and fell into the water. She could not swim very well
and therefore cried for help. The female on the other side quickly jumped
into a small boat, paddled and rescued her. They became very good friends and
often met on one of the islands in the middle of the river. This went on for
some time and they were very sad that they could not meet under normal
circumstances for example on one side of the river or even in their villages.
Therefore, they decided to talk to their elders
and males and convince them to fight the elephants and the gorillas together.
“Once a year in spring, you go over to the other
side and plunder the village, then the elephants take half of the prey and
disappear. Then, the long tails with the help of the gorillas come over here,
plunder our village and take half of the prey and disappear,” she explained
her elders and males. “Where do you know this from, female?” the elders
asked, “do you talk to the members of the other tribe?” “Yes, I do,” she
answered, “and I have a better plan for us instead of always giving the
elephants or the gorillas half of our goods.” The elders looked at her in
puzzlement. “Why don’t we make peace with the long tails, build a bridge over
the river and exchange our goods with them, then we don’t have to share
anything with the elephants?” she put the question. “But how are we going to
get rid of the elephants?” they replied. “If we unite our forces with the
long tails, then we will be strong enough to beat them,” she answered, “and
in autumn when the gorillas come, we will help the long tails to get rid of
them.” The elders told her to go back to her hut so that they could discuss
the case.
The next day, the elders told her to narrate them
everything about the acquaintance she had to the long tails. So, she told
them about her friend.
Of course, the elders needed one more day to
think about the plan and then she got the permission to contact her friend on
the island and to find out whether the long tails agreed to work together.
The same happened on the other side.
The two friends now met on the island very often.
And then, the elders came together on one island.
The summer had just began and the water level of
the river was low, so it was easy to build a bridge. Although the members of
the two people watched each other with suspicion, they worked together to
build a defence line against the gorillas, who would come in autumn.
The line had just been finished in time when the
gorillas arrived. The long ears were called over and together with the long
tails, they beat the gorillas. Of course, it was a hard battle but the big
animals could be defeated.
A big feast was organized and the males of both
peoples sat together till late at night to celebrate their victory and swear
eternal brotherhood.
In spring, the same happened to the surprised
elephants.
After that, there were many mixed marriages and
kids with long ears and long tails or short ears and short tails were born.
And the two females?
Their kid was the most wonderful of all: Real
love and the peaceful living together of the two peoples!
