The children were already in bed waiting for
their father to come and tell them a tale before sleeping. But the father did
not come. He had a big problem, he had told them many tales and he didn't
know any new ones. So he put his coat on the mother and sent her into the
room. Of course, the children recognized her immediately and demanded their
father. And from that he had the idea of a new tale.
So he went in and started:
the boy who wanted to be someone different
Once upon a time there was a child who wanted to
be someone different every day. Why? Because I wanted to find out who he
really was. But every time he went around the small town where he was born,
even if he dressed, talked, and behaved differently, people immediately
recognized him and only reacted like, "Ah, this is just that
  Miguelito."
He realized that they would never look at him
differently because they knew his past.
So one day he decided to leave his small town and
  try other places.
As he walked, he thought about the role he wanted
to try first. And when he saw a town, he thought he wanted to play a hero. So
he cut a big stick from a tree and entered the town.
But what did he see? The streets were deserted
  and everything was silent.
Suddenly, he heard a terrible voice that screamed,
"Hey you! Come here!" Miguelito looked around and in the middle of
the marketplace, he perceived a tall and very large man. "Yes. You! Come
  here!" the man yelled again.
First, Miguelito wanted to run away, but then he
remembered that he wanted to play the role of a brave hero. Therefore, he went
closer, but in his heart, he was very afraid. In the windows of the houses
around the marketplace, many heads appeared to see what would happen.
The tall big man had a bottle of rum in one hand
and was drinking constantly and a big stick in the other. Miguelito noticed
that he was very drunk. He knew that a drunken man was very dangerous because
one could never know what someone like that would do. When Miguelito was
close enough, the big man raised his stick to hit him and Miguelito almost
shit in his pants. But the big man was so drunk that he fell on his back in
  front of Miguelito's feet.
Many people left the houses and celebrated
Miguelito because they thought that he had defeated the big man.
That was the moment, when Miguelito felt that he
really didn't want to be a hero.
He soon left that town to find another town and
  another role to play.
When he saw the next town, he decided to be a
scholar, a man of science. He put on a black coat, a scholar's hat, and
  glasses.
When he entered the town, many people approached
him and asked him many questions. Some questions were very stupid. For example,
when it would rain. He looked at the sky and told them it would rain the next
day. The next day, it actually rained and people celebrated Miguelito as a
  great magician.
But Miguelito decided that he did not like this
role either, so he soon left the town.
In the next town, he wanted to be a saint, so he
dressed like a priest. Many people came to him and told him of their sorrows.
But that made him so sad and he couldn't even help them.
He visited a few more towns and played a
different role everywhere, but did not like any of these roles.
But by then, he had realized that what other
people thought of him was absolutely insignificant.
So he returned to his hometown, gathered a few
close friends around him who noticed that he had changed who really cared
about him and who tried to understand him as he tried to understand them.
The children were very satisfied with the end of
the tale and fell asleep. |
