Best friends have no secret

Banana and Coconut, two strange names for monkeys but that was the food what they liked the best. At the same time, that was the only difference between them. Even their houses of birth stood side by side and they had known each other since the youngest age. The village elders always saw them together sitting next to each other when they taught the children everything, they had experienced in life. At the age of 12, they went out together to hunt down the tiger which endangered the surroundings. That was the case when Banana saved Coconut’s life, but Banana wouldn’t have been able to shoot that wild animal if Coconut hadn’t served as a kind bait. Before they got married, they advised each other about the girls in the village. They were the best friends and there was no secret between them.
One day, Coconut went down to the river to bring water like everybody did several times a day when he heard screams of help coming from the shore. He knew that voice, it was Banana’s daughter. He began to run as fast as he could and then, he saw her. She had fallen into the water and couldn’t get out, but that wasn’t the time for bathing, behind her, a crocodile was approaching. The shore was rather precipitous at that part and she surely had not gone into the water voluntarily. He looked around whether there was any kind of long loose branch, then he saw a branch having grown over the water surface. From there, he could hang down and pull her out, but the branch was too old and rotten and too thin to carry both of them. He didn’t know what to do and watched the crocodile come closer and closer to the panic-stricken girl. Suddenly, fisher monkeys in boats appeared and shot at the wild animal with their bows and arrows. The predator submerged and she was rescued.
At first, he wanted to shout in joy but then he remembered, that he had not done everything in his power to save Banana’s daughter. Sadly, he hid behind some bushes until the group of fisher monkeys had disappeared.
What should he tell his best friend? Yes, I witnessed the whole event and arrived first at the site but didn’t risk my life?
Drowned in doubts about himself, he went closer to the branch, stepped on it, bopped up and down on it only a bit and it broke so that he landed in the water. The branch wouldn’t have supported them both. Fortunately, there was no crocodile because he could hardly climb out of the water.
A lot of “ifs” ran through his mind. If there hadn’t been the fisher monkeys and he had tried to pull her out they both would have been devoured by the wild animal.
But even so, he felt deeply ashamed of not having tried it and therefore went to the banana trees to collect some bananas to make everybody believe that he had been collecting bananas at the time of the little one’s accident.
When finally he arrived at the settlement, his friend came up to him and told him the news about the fisher monkeys having rescued his daughter. Our hero tried to imitate an astonished face because he couldn’t tell his best friend the truth.
