The law of the strongest and cleverest

Once upon a time, there was a monkey king. He was the lord of the whole banana valley, nobody dared to contradict him because he was the strongest and cleverest, and everybody tried to win his favour and mercy because his anger could be terrible. However, his empire was rather prosperous because he was not very interested in anything, didn’t make war against the other valleys’ monkeys and as long as everybody fell on their feet, when he came around, and filled his stomach, he could be rather peaceful. Therefore, the monkeys paid attention not to make him angry and keep his stomach satisfied saying “a full stomach is lazy”.
This went on for a very long time, until a big gorilla having heard of the prosperous valley came and overtook power. None of the monkeys even thought about defending the king because they couldn’t imagine one king being worse or better than the other.
However, the new king was worse than the former, made war, looted houses and devastated fields when he was in a bad mood or when it was raining for days and he got bored.
The former king felt the restrictions even more than others did because, as he hadn’t been able to escape the valley, he had to serve the new king personally. He often talked to his former subjects about overthrowing the newcomer but they wouldn’t move a paw for him.
After some years, he slowly changed and being clever, he recognized that “not having more rights than others is better than having fewer rights than others because there will always be stronger or cleverer than you”.
Therefore, he proposed his former subjects democracy if they helped him to chase the tyrant. First, they looked at him in a strange way because they were not sure whether they could trust him but the expression of his face was so sad that they believed that he had learned his lesson.
One evening, when the gorilla had filled his stomach so much that he could hardly move, the whole people of the monkeys attacked him and he had to flee. The former king being the strongest and cleverest asked them to gather in the main square because he wanted to hold a speech. “I know that I was not a good king and I don’t want to be a king anymore,” he told them. Everybody cheered at him. “But I think the gorilla will come back with his friends and try to re-establish his rule,” he continued, “let me be your general for only one battle to organize the defence of our democracy!” The monkeys didn’t not really know whether king or general was a better word for a tyrant. “We will have to close the entry of the valley. The smaller monkeys shall sit on the trees and throw stones and me and the stronger ones will fight in the front row.”
The next day, the gorillas attacked. It was a terrible fight but the tactic worked. The smaller monkeys on the trees threw their stones so skilfully on the heads of the gorillas that it was easy for the bigger monkeys fighting in the first row to beat the apes.
When the victorious monkeys began their normal life again, the former king worked with them on the fields and collected fruits like all the others. From then on, he was the most respected member of the community and everybody bowed in front of him, not because of fear but because of esteem.
They made a big inscription on the rock at the main square “Not having more rights than others is better than having fewer rights than others!” in memory of the strongest and cleverest monkey of the valley.
