tale 56 the excluded majority

The excluded majority

Once upon a time in the valley of banana land, there was a very little but beautiful settlement. The monkeys there lived on fishing, fruit planting and collecting. They didn’t believe in anything special, just in the beauty of life and solidarity towards each other.
However one day, a big noise could be heard coming from the river. The fishing monkeys there had caught a very special fish. Big and small, old and young hurried to the shore to see what had happened.
They made a circle around the monkeys who brought their catch on land. “We found him in a small boat floating in the middle of the river and first thought he was dead. But as we came closer and examined him, we discovered that he was still alive, so we poured a bit of clean water into his mouth and he slowly recovered.”
Everybody from the settlement observed him with great interest. Newcomers were very rare, normally there were only some traders from down the river coming up from time to time.
This monkey was special; he had his head shaved completely bald and protruding eyes. Probably, he hadn’t eaten for days, therefore being weakened and exhausted. He was put on a stretcher and carried into the village. The strongest monkey readily gave him his hut and immediately began to build a new one for himself just some meters far away from his old. Others brought cooked food and drink.
He soon recovered completely and asked for a sharp knife to shave the short hair on his head and face, which had begun to cover it.
Then, in the evening, every member of the settlement gathered around the big fire in the central square to hear his story.
The monkeys of the valley didn’t wear clothes as it was always warm, so they didn’t see the need to wear any. However, this monkey covered every part of his body, except his hands, feet and head. Did he have any hair on his body like other monkeys? they asked each other.
“My dear brothers and sisters!” he began, “god has sent me to you and you have received me well.” All monkeys looked at each other. What was he talking about? Who was god? How did that god or the newcomer himself know about them? “God is very grateful for it and will make you rich and happy,” the bald monkey continued. “Oh! We are very happy and always help each other,” some of the monkeys replied, “we are satisfied with what we have.” A malicious smile could be seen in the bald’s face, “still, there is something missing in your lives.” Everybody listened with open mouth and ears. Something was missing in their lives?
“Have you never heard of the great god. This superior spirit which created everybody of you and everything around you.” Children looked at their mothers with shock in their faces, pointing at each other, “you are not my mother?” and the fishermen, “aren’t the fish of spawn?” and others, “aren’t the fruit from the trees?”
The bald monkey was very satisfied with himself; in no time at all, he had managed to plant doubts into the heart of these simple but honest souls.
From then on every evening, everybody gathered around the big fire in the central square to hear the bald talking about god. “You must build a house for god, a temple, and praise him there. He also needs food. You must bring him food.” he continued.
The next day, all the inhabitants of the settlement helped to build a temple under the instructions of the bald. Although it wasn’t a big building but it was the biggest and finest, towering over the whole settlement. Then, they brought food for their new neighbour, the god, and the bald told them that they had to wear clothes entering the temple. “Clothes make real monkeys out of you,” he told them and slowly the whole settlement was ‘civilized’. All went well for some time and the bald grew fatter and fatter establishing more and more rules not only for the temple and its ceremonies but as well for the whole settlement.
However one day, one of the smallest females came home from the forest loaded with freshly collected fruit on her back but without clothes because it was just too warm and to wear clothes at the same time. When the bald saw her coming, he shouted at her angrily. Everybody came out of their houses or from other places to see what had happened because they had never heard angry shouting before. “You are insulting god and the settlement,” he screamed, “you can’t be member of this community anymore.” She was very frightened and looked at him with big gentle eyes. “Leave the settlement at once!” he told her. The poor female was so shocked that she dropped the load from her back and began to cry. But the tears did not soften the bald’s heart. Again and again, he ordered her to leave the settlement. With her head inclined and sobbing, she left the community.
She walked for a long time by random upwards along the river and could not see much because her eyes were filled with tears. What should she do now?
Then, she came a clearing of the forest and as she was very tired she lay down and fell asleep. When she woke up again, it was already getting dark, therefore, she prepared a smaller shelter and made a fire.
Actually, she had never been so far from her settlement and didn’t know this it but it was a nice place. The clearing was more or less as large as her old settlement with fruit trees, the river bordered it on one side. She decided that this would be her new home.
She had not lived there for a month alone but in peace when one of her former playmates arrived. “This bald is a tyrant,” she declared and told the other what had happened to her. “Never mind,” she said to the newcomer, “this is a very nice place and tomorrow, I will show you everything.” They began to smile at the prospect of living together in peace and without the bald.
After a certain time, the settlement grew bigger and bigger because more and more of her former companions arrived looking for refuge and at the end, they only counted who might still missing of the old settlement.
A year having passed, they were all happily united again. It was a very little but beautiful settlement. The monkeys lived on fishing, fruit planting and collecting.
It was the bald with protruding eyes. Probably, he hadn’t eaten for days, therefore being weakened and exhausted.

My dear readers! What were the inhabitants of the new settlement going to do? Did they have to send the bald away or look for a new settlement for themselves or had they finally understood that they had to teach these balds talking about god all the time that the beauty of life and solidarity towards each other was all they needed in their life?

tale 55 don’t serve the lion

The lion can give and take. So, don’t serve the lion!

Once upon a time, there was a very strong monkey. The lion proposed the monkey to work for him. So, the strong monkey began to work for the lion, stole from the small monkeys, plundered their villages and got a horse, a house, a position and many other things from the lion as a kind of payment.

One day while plundering a settlement, he met an old monkey, who told him, “The lion can give and take. So, don’t work for the lion!” Our strong monkey only laughed at him.

Some month later, another strong monkey came who seemed to be more loyal to the lion. So, the lion took everything from him. “That’s not right!” our hero said. He left the court and turned to the small monkeys but they only laughed at him, “The lion can give you right and take the right from you. So, you shouldn’t have worked for the lion!”

He went to the biggest animal, the elephant. This animal was already very old and very wise.

Monkey: “Why do you serve the lion?”

Elephant: “I’m the leader of the elephants but not for all of them. I don’t serve the lion but I can’t go against him because there are many spies, traitors, henchmen and feet lickers like once you were one. It will still take a long time before all the animals without power unite against the lion and other lions. However, there is a slow change, just like you have changed and there will be more and more like you. We have to educate them and they have to learn that it’s not worth to serve the powerful whoever they are and that it’s better to think themselves and not being told what to do. Some thousand years ago, there was a very intelligent animal in Greece, which dreamt of democracy.

Monkey: What is “democracy”?

Elephant: “demos” means the small animals and “democracy” means the rule of the small animals. The idea has been born and can never be made forgotten anymore, but it’s easier for a handful of powerful to trust each other than for many small animals to work together without a leader.

Our strong monkey thought for a long time before recognizing that the whole affair was not about him and the injustice having happened to him.

It took him some more years to stand on the side of the small animals because he understood “If you stand by the weak, you will be great! If you stand by the powerful, you can only be a henchman!”

However, there are more and more strong animals understanding that it’s not worth to serve the lions.

tale 54 an egoist for everybody and everybody for an egoist

An egoist for everybody and everybody for an egoist

Once upon a time, there was a wonderful valley with a rich fruit tree, a big piece of grassland and a lake with the clearest water. There was only one big trouble; the fruit tree was dominated by a gorilla, the grassland by a lion and the lake by a crocodile.
When the birds wanted some fruit, they chose one amongst themselves, which sacrificed itself and got beaten while the others collected as much fruit as possible.
When the gazelles wanted to graze, they chose one amongst themselves, which got chased and very often devoured by the lion, while the others ran down the hill to graze as much as possible.
When the frogs and fish wanted to get some seaweed, they chose one amongst themselves, which got chased and very often devoured by the crocodile, while the others rapidly stuffed their stomachs.
One day, a small monkey arrived. He looked down from a hill, saw the wonderful valley with the rich fruit tree, the big piece of grassland and the lake with the clearest water. He thought to have found paradise on earth.
When he climbed up the tree to pick a sweet fruit, he suddenly noticed the big gorilla. He could hardly jump down from the tree to save himself while the birds took their chance to collect fruit.
Then he noticed the lion and could hardly save himself into the lake where the crocodile was already waiting for him while the gazelles took their chance to graze and the fish and frogs to get some seaweed.
When he finally reached the hill on the other side of the valley, he was completely out of breath while the birds, gazelles, fish and frogs laughed loudly.
“You are a good climber, runner and swimmer! You could do that for us every day!”
For a day or two, the monkey sat on his hill and looked down at the valley waiting for another animal to do the same as him and for him to get fruit and water but none showed up. The monkey decided to go around on the hills to the birds.
“Hey you, birds! How many of you are here!” he called them. First only one or two made their voices heard. “Only two birds? To me it was as if I had seen thousands of you collecting fruit when the gorilla chased me.” Some more could be heard. “I’m just a small monkey. Should you be such cowards as to be afraid of me? Or do you even shit in your pants when you notice a fly?” That was enough for the birds; all came out at once and prepared to attack him. He ran down the hill as fast as he could to the tree. When the gorilla saw all those birds coming towards him, he just jumped down from the tree and saved himself. The monkey hid behind some branches and when the birds noticed that there was no gorilla, they sat down tranquilly and collected fruits. “You see!” he told the birds, “now you are not even afraid of the gorilla anymore.” A bit surprised, they looked at him but didn’t hurt him while he was feasting on the fruit amongst them. He was very satisfied with himself.
The next day, he went around on the hills to the gazelles. “Hey you, gazelles! How many of you are here!” he called them. First only one or two showed up. “Only two gazelles? To me it was as if I had seen thousands of you grazing when the lion chased me.” Some more could be seen. “I’m just a small monkey. Should you be such cowards as to be afraid of me? Or do you even shit in your pants when you notice a fly?” That was enough for the gazelles; all came out at once and prepared to attack him. He ran down the hill as fast as he could. When the lion saw all those gazelles united coming towards him, he just fled and saved himself. The monkey hid somewhere in the grass and when the gazelles noticed that there was no lion, they began to graze calmly. “You see!” he told the gazelles, “now you are not even afraid of the lion anymore.” A bit surprised, they looked at him but didn’t hurt him.
When they had stuffed their bellies, he called upon them, “now, let’s go to the lake!” Probably, the gazelles had understood his tactics and followed him. However, they noticed the crocodile and wanted to run away again. “Hey you, fish and frogs! How many of you are here!” he called them. First only one or two showed up. “Only two of you? To me it was as if I had seen thousands of you collecting seaweed when the crocodile chased me.” Some more could be seen. “I’m just a small monkey. Should you be such cowards as to be afraid of me? Or do you even shit in your pants when you notice a fly?” That was enough for the fish and frogs; all came out at once and prepared to attack him. But, when the crocodile saw all those fish and frogs united coming towards him, he just fled and saved himself. The monkey stood at the shore and when the fish and frogs noticed that there was no crocodile, they began to collect seaweed calmly. “You see!” he told the fish and frogs, “now you are not even afraid of the crocodile anymore.” A bit surprised, they looked at him but didn’t hurt him. Even the gazelles and birds all came to drink at the lake.
There was a moment when all the small animals looked at the monkey who was just having a refreshing bath. “Why do you do this for us?” they asked him, “why do you help us?” “I’m just an egoist and only followed my own interest. Now, you can eat and me, I can eat. Now, you can drink and me, I can drink. If I fought against you small birds or gazelles or fish and frogs, I would have to fight for fruit and water not only against you but as well against the gorilla, the lion and the crocodile, and as I’m a small animal as well, I’m to enter into a defence pact with other small animals.”

Dear Africans, Asians, Arabs, Jews, Gypsies, poor people, minorities, women, homosexuals and all other kind of social and ethnical fringe groups! Don’t fight against each other! Because you all sit in the same shit, you are all supressed, so it would be much better for you all to stick together.
