We only want peace – leads to submissiveness! Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was the
coconut island. It wasn’t large and only around 30 monkeys lived there. Of
course, their food consisted of coconuts. However, there were other kinds of
fruit as well. But why didn’t they eat bananas, apples, pears, plums and
berries which grew abundantly on the island? In this tale, I will tell you the reason. 5 of the monkeys where very conservative and
didn’t like changes. Once they discovered a monkey eating bananas. “Why are
you poisoning yourself? Don’t you respect our ancient culture? Do you want to
destroy us?” they shouted at him. After this kind of intimidation, this
monkey had his bananas only when no other monkey was around. Most of the
other monkeys did the same with bananas, apples, pears, plums and berries. That way, none knew about the others having other
kinds of food. They all thought: “I only want to live in peace." And as nobody contradicted the 5 old-fashioned
monkeys, they were not confronted with other opinions and thought that they
were the majority. Even all the other monkeys thought that everybody agreed
with those 5 and as they all only wanted to live in peace; they didn’t talk
to anybody about them as well secretly having other fruits. However, what was even worse, some of the monkeys
began to denounce others they had seen having other fruits in order to turn
suspicion away from themselves. And of course, everybody condemned the denounced
in order not to be suspicious himself. Because they only wanted to live in peace, they
became submissive. Finally, we must not forget that even the 5 conservative
monkeys liked other fruits very much and when nobody was around, they enjoyed bananas,
apples, pears, plums and berries themselves. |
